Look to Your Closet - The Unruly Home: Volume 6

Sometimes the best inspiration isn’t on Pinterest — it’s already hanging in your closet.

Clothes on wooden hangers in neutral and earthy tones. A straw hat hangs on the beige wall, creating a cozy, minimalist vibe.

We all want a home that feels like us. But when we sit down to decorate, it’s easy to freeze. Suddenly, every choice feels like it has to be “right.”

✨ The couch.

✨ The rug.

✨ The paint color.

✨ The pillow pattern.

What if you already had the answers — without even realizing it?

That’s where your closet comes in.

Your Closet Is a Mirror

Think about it: your closet is already full of choices you’ve made about color, pattern, texture, and style.

The cozy sweater you reach for every fall. The breezy dress that makes you feel alive. The leather boots you’ve worn for years.

These aren’t accidents. They’re little glimpses of what you love — and that love can spill over into your home.

How to Use Your Closet as a Design Guide

You don’t need a designer mood board to get started. You just need to pay attention to what you’re naturally drawn to.

Here are a few ways to “shop” your closet for clues:

🌿 Look at color palettes. Do you reach for warm earth tones, or do you live in crisp blues and whites? Let that guide your paint, rug, or accent choices.

🌿 Notice patterns. If you mix florals with stripes in your outfits, give yourself permission to do the same on your sofa with pillows or throws.

🌿 Feel the textures. Do you love soft cottons, chunky knits, or sleek leather? Those textures belong in your living room just as much as in your wardrobe.

🌿 Identify your mood. Is your style relaxed and natural? Bold and playful? Minimal and clean? That’s the mood you’ll feel most at home in when you carry it into your space.

The Beauty of Consistency

When your closet and your home share the same DNA, something powerful happens:

You start to feel more yourself in your space. You start to see your home not as a performance, but as an extension of who you already are.

It’s not about impressing anyone else. It’s about living surrounded by what makes you feel grounded, supported, and alive.

Try This: Closet to Couch

Cozy entryway with clothes, hat, and rope on hooks. Brown boots on a wicker bench. Patterned blanket hangs nearby. Potted plant on floor.

Pull out your three favorite clothing items — the ones you’d never part with.

Now ask yourself:

  • What colors show up?

  • What textures do they share?

  • How do they make me feel?

Take those answers into your living room, bedroom, or kitchen. That’s your starting point.

Your Home, Your Reflection

When you look to your closet, you’re not starting from scratch. You’re starting from you.

What’s Next 🌿

This was the final volume of The Unruly Home blog series.

But it’s not the end — just the beginning. These 6 were part of my larger set of 15 Unrules: gentle reminders to help you trust yourself, bend the so-called “rules,” and create a home that feels like you.

I’ll be gathering all 15 into an ebook soon, so you can keep them close whenever you need a nudge of clarity or confidence.

Until then, may these first 6 Unrules give you freedom, ease, and permission to design your home from the inside out.
